- Attends pre-service training programs
at the Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ)
Correctional Training Academy and receives on-the-job
training while working with experienced correctional
officers at the assigned facility.
- Searches for contraband and provides
security; counts, feeds, and supervises offenders in
housing, work, and other areas accessed by stairs; and
maintains security of various assigned areas involving
long periods of sitting and standing, climbing stairs
and ladders to reach assigned areas, and working at
heights.
- Provides custody and security of
offenders including observing actions of offenders,
squatting and bending to conduct "pat" and "strip"
searches of offenders, restraining and securing
sometimes assaultive offenders, and transferring and
transporting offenders by walking or riding in various
vehicles such as trailers, vans, buses, and other forms
of transportation.
- Supervises and provides security of
offenders performing technical skills such as
construction, maintenance, laundry, food service, and in
varied industrial and agricultural operations which
involve climbing stairs and ladders, and climbing around
the inside or outside of buildings; works outdoors and
indoors without air conditioning; works around motorized
or moving equipment and machinery; and is subject to all
types of weather.
- Responds to emergencies, including
climbing stairs and ladders while searching for escaped
offenders, hearing calls for and calling for help,
giving first aid at the emergency site, carrying an
injured or unconscious offender or employee various
distances to safety up or down stairs and ladders; and
uses force and deadly force, including the use of
chemical agents and firearms, to control offenders.
- Reads, reviews, and properly applies
information found in offender records which is related
to the offenders health and safety and to the security
of the facility; provides leadership and technical
guidance to other staff; complies with policies,
procedures, rules, and regulations; and prepares and
maintains records, forms, and reports.

Citizen of the U.S. or alien authorized
to work in the U.S.

At least 18 years old.

High School Diploma from a
state-accredited school or a state-issued G.E.D.
certificate.

Males, age 18 through 25, must be
registered with the Selective Service if required to do
so by Federal Law.

Not be on active duty in the military
unless on terminal leave. (May screen if within six
months of eligibility)

Not be on probation or paying out a fine
or currently doing community service for any criminal
offense.

Not be pending charges for any criminal
offense or have an outstanding arrest warrant.

Never have been convicted of a felony
offense.

Not have had a Class A or B misdemeanor
conviction in the past 5 years.

Never been convicted of a drug-related
offense.

Never been convicted of an offense that
involved domestic violence.

Be able to perform the
essential functions of a
Correctional Officer, with or without reasonable
accommodation.

Pass the TDCJ Pre-Employment Test.

Pass the TDCJ drug test.
- Uniforms and equipment are furnished
at no cost.
- Laundry of uniforms is furnished at
no cost.
- Paid health insurance for the full
time employee (50% for part time) and optional dependent
coverage. The state pays 50% of the dependent coverage
premium full time employees, 25% dependent care coverage
for part time employees. Health insurance becomes
effective on the 1st day of the month following 90 days
of employment.

- Meals are furnished free of charge
while on duty.
- Vacation time is earned based on
length of service, starting at 8 hours per month. Sick

Tobacco Free Policy
All TDCJ owned and leased facilities are
tobacco free. No tobacco products may be used anywhere
in TDCJ facilities. This policy applies to everyone in
TDCJ facilities whether employees, applicants, or

Correctional Officers attend the Training Academy for 6
weeks and on-the-job training at their unit of assignment
for 2 weeks on a full-time basis. During this period,
officers receive $1,816/month. For any remaining part of
the second month of employment, the part-time salary is
$908/month. |
